From a different angle

by Leah L. Cole

I went out to the dam last night.
It was warmer than the first night we spent there.
The breeze dribbled over my face.
Instead of sliding up into my body.
The night wasn't as clear
The air traffic sliced the sky to ribbons
With con trails and noisy jet engines.

The lake moaned as the ice began to freeze again
I wasn't alone, and I felt invaded.
And neglected when my partner didn't speak.

I saw a huge meteor,
But instead of being overcome with wonder
I was oppressed with a sense of marking time,
Or even of sliding down the icy hill I've been climbing
Away from him and towards you.
Though I know you won't be waiting at the summit,
I'll either climb to the top of the world
Or die of starvation along the way
