"Brighter Shade of Blue"
by Joseph McCombs
Some follies never wake a dreaming heart,
Some truths can't put a burning hope to sleep.
Though love is sometimes born of errant sparks,
Its yield I always felt compelled to keep.
The slightest things reminded me of you
And songs I sang all ran into the blues.
And then, upon recalling sometime thoughts,
A voice appeared quite suddenly to me,
Reminding me of countless truths forgot
As fancy turned into a desperate dream.
"Leave," the spirit beckoned me to do.
"Leave, for yet your sky may still be blue."
The message never seemed before so clear;
I should have learned it many years ago:
If time is all it took to bring you near,
Then time is all it takes to let you go.
I'd never understood what loving means:
That two-way street I'd never learned to cross.
Now as your faded image paints my scene,
I mouth the last goodbye and count my loss.
I leave now, in a brighter shade of blue,
And never dream another dream of you.
I'm leaving in a brighter shade of blue,
And never dream another dream of you.
