Carolyn & Neal

by Joseph McCombs

I wanted Neal to stay on
or at least go with Jack
so he'd have someone to fall back on
but the air was too thin for one
so he put his leather jacket on
and swore he'd be back when the time was right
"hold my mail for a day or two,
kiss the kids good night"
I couldn't speak so I silently watched him
repenting his way down the road
the gravel kicked up behind him
so now he carries his load
alone in some foreign city
where no one can recognize his face
he did his time at home
now he's finding another place
I'm sure he calls out sometimes
calls out for his Carolyn dear
I'm sure when the time is right
he'll find his way back here
but I have two kids to take care of
there's bills to pay, and I haven't touched his debt
over and over the record plays
-- I couldn't foresee, and now I can't forget --

I went away, I went away,
But the music of my Carolyn, I carry to this day.
