"Clockwatching (If I Were Still With You)"

by Joseph McCombs

It's twenty after ten in San Francisco;
I wonder if you've woken up by now,
Or if the raging demon of an opium dream
Is bringing panicked sweat to your brow...

It's growing near one-thirty here in Boston;
I'm walking through a shopping mall alone,
Looking away from stores that I can't afford
And people I can't say I know...

             I want to make the tour with you,
             I want to catch the scene with you,
             I want to spend the day with you,
             I want to see the sun with you.
             I want to call the shot with you,
             I want to ride the wind with you,
             I want to kill the time with you,
             I want to spend my life with you.

I'd be as loving as the god that you never prayed to
No other love would do the things that I'd do
I'd take all your dreams, make the right ones come true
Yeah, that's what I'd do if I were still with you.

I'd stand like a mountain and smile like the sun
Never worry about anything, or anyone
I'd soar through the crossfire, come shining on through
Yeah, that's what I'd do if I were still with you.

I'd kiss like the wind that brushes your face
Crumble my castle -- I could build anyplace
I'd strip off my clothes and jump into the pool
Yeah, that's what I'd do if I were still with you.

I'd be high as a tower and wide as a smile
Sing praises down every foot of every mile
The distance don't matter if I'm loving the view
But I'd love it much better if I were still with you.
