Out in the Cold
by Joseph McCombs
Someone speaks a forgotten name --
the former subject of love refrains;
Now, today, a source of shame,
the self to blame, for feeling too strong.
Someone speaks of love gone wrong,
laments his tale in verse and song;
Hungry ghosts all chant along
in a throng of hearts, chilled.
Someone speaks of life unfulfilled
where all is lost, with naught to build;
After sap and sugar spilled,
someone killed the last eager eye.
Someone speaks with a jaded sigh,
whispering words that reek of goodbye;
"Loved and lost" -- but wiser: Not I,
who now sows ice, and is reaping rain.
