Evolution

by Joseph McCombs

My mother passed along the story to me
that before the advent of man
the animals all spoke with one another

then when man overtook the languages --
made them languages of hate, misunderstanding --
the wiser animals decided
it just wasn't worth the trouble
to even attempt communication with fools

and taught themselves to chirp and bark and meow
without such inane interruptions.
