I use song lyrics and lines from poems
in the same way the true scholars use
meticulous references and footnotes:
to prove that someone else has seen what I see

and in a way it doesn't matter
if it was said by William Shakespeare,
Winston Churchill, Rothbart & John,
Plato or Paul Kantner -- all that matters
is that it was an idea and it made sense
to me and I passed the thought along
and used it in a good way

me an' mankind,
we go way back
