"One and One"
by Joseph McCombs
There were days when we were an infighting nation:
Armed with pride like we'd brandished bayonets,
We would build a city, then mock the creation.
And there were days when we flowed like poetic lines:
Your eyes shone crystal of immeasurable depth,
And the languid life led clouds to strain to sigh.
But the passing years calmed our tumultuous sea
With lethargy choking you and me;
Our love is a rusted monument to view,
And living with you feels like love minus two.
So I don't think there will be any more days with you.
I won't dive backward to replace a moment;
We're more alive as one and one than two.
