Television

If I tried to count all of the TV shows I've ever watched, I think my head would explode, and probably yours too. Tastes change, and despite the fact that at one point in my life I found "Captain Caveman" to be entertaining, I don't feel that it deserves mention here (other than this one of course). Basically, I'm just going with shows that left some kind of lasting impression, although I'm sure you'll start to question that statement after looking over my list, but hey, not everyone is going to like all of these shows, so hang in there.

I try not to watch too much TV anymore, but these are some shows that either I can't miss (I praise the invention of the VCR) or try to catch whenever they're on. Yes, there are more animated programs listed than live-action. I'm not sure if that says more about the state of television or me. Listed are both current and older shows. Many can still be seen at all hours of the day and night.

  • Jump the Shark - Did your favorite TV show ever reach a point where it just became totally ridiculous? Cast votes here for your favorite shows.
  • TV Scripts - Dr. Who, the Simpsons, the X-Files, and many more.
  • Alive TV - PBS. Great experimental TV. There have been episodes that have left me absolutely spellbound, but there's also been some real trash too.
  • Ally McBeal - A lot of people I know are surprised that I like it because I'm a guy, but this show really appeals to my warped sense of humor. I don't even think I can explain why.
  • Batman - This includes Batman: The Animated Series, The Adventures of Batman & Robin and The Batman/Superman Adventure Hour. Consistent scripting and animation. I really have yet to be dissapointed.
  • Batman Beyond - Same vein as the other Batman shows, just as good.
  • Cartoon Planet - This page is actually dedicated to Brak. Hail Brak!
  • Connections - John Burke's series was always fascinating. Who else could make a discussion of yogurt interesting? Of course, there weren't many who could tie in the space shuttle to the same discussion either. There was a short lived "Connections II", also hosted by Burke, but it never captured the feel of the original.
  • Daria - Daria is wonderful. Hard to believe this spun off of "Beavis & Butthead." The series started to wind down following the first couple of seasons, and ended up quitting on it.
  • Dexter's Laboratory - One of the most truly bizarre cartoons ever made.
  • Dinosaurs - Another winner from the mind of Jim Henson. This page is from the Netherlands.
  • Doctor Who - One of the cheesiest (and best) shows ever. The longest lasting sci-fi show ever.
  • Due South - A quirky police drama featuring a Canadian mountie named Fraser and his wolf Diefenbaker. Oh, and Fraser's father's ghost is a regular character. That should tell you something.
  • The Family Guy - Thouroughly bizarre. I love it. Unfortunately, I think it is one of those shows that will burn itself out quickly. Too good too fast.
  • Farscape - From Henson Studios, this sci-fi series has created a fascinating group of characters.
  • Futurama - Matt Groening's second TV show. Everyone was worried at first that it wouldn't live up to our expectations, but it surpassed them.
  • Homicide: Life on the Street - Gritty and intelligent. The later seasons, following the departure of Andre Brougher and other popular actors, started to show the series' age, but still high quality. It can still be seen on CourtTV.
  • In Search Of... - My first exposure to the world of the paranormal. It used to scare the hell out of me. Leonard Nimoy's voice, the grainy film they used...
  • Law & Order - Incredibly high quality police/courtroom drama.
  • Looney Tunes - Unfortunately, about all you can see of them nowadays are the censored versions. They're still better than 90% of what's out there.
  • Martial Law - Highly entertaining. It stars Sammo Hung, acclaimed Chinese actor and director. Hey, this is the guy who brought Jackie Chan to life.
  • Men in Black: the Series - Definitely worth a try.
  • Monty Python - I don't think any words are necessary.
  • The Muppet Show - There are depressingly few sites devoted to the show itself.
  • Mystery Science Theater 3000 - If I could understand how they can watch those horrible movies all of the time, I think the universe might somehow make more sense. Depressingly, after 10 wonderful years, the end of the series has arrived. Another MST3K site.
  • The Pretender - I'm not sure why this show appeals to me so much. Maybe it's the main character's fascination with Pez and Mr. Potato Head.
  • Ren & Stimpy - Well, the first few episodes anyway. Once John Kricfalusi left, the quality left with him. If you've never seen "Space Madness," then you're missing out.
  • Robotech - Despite the fact that it was dubbed, enough of the concepts broke through for me to appreciate its uniqueness from American TV. Still one of my all-time favorites.
  • Schoolhouse Rock - It's enjoyed a much-deserved resurgence recently.
  • The Simpsons - One of the most consistently funny shows ever made. Although, the last season or two has started to show its age, it is still one of the greatest television programs ever.
  • South Park - Hide your children. Not for the faint of heart.
  • Space Ghost Coast to Coast - Do YOU have a victory boogie? Every once in a while a show comes along, and you wonder how anyone ever thought of it. This... this is one of those shows.
  • Speed Racer - Almost everyone's first exposure to the world of anime. Who knew this was normal by comparison?
  • Star Trek - This includes the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. I've been a ST fan since before ST:TNG, watching reruns of the original series every weekend. I'm just a sci-fi geek who loves this stuff. I will still never, ever set foot in a Star Trek convention though. I'd be too scared.
  • That 70's Show - I didn't want to like it, I didn't think I would like it, but I do.
  • Twin Peaks - David Lynch's mindbending miniseries.
  • The Wild, Wild West - It was cancelled because people thought it was too violent. Poor deluded fools.
  • The X-Files - Official site, or one of the thousands of other sites. It has everything: aliens, monsters, conspiracies, humor. What more can you ask?
  • Wallace & Gromit - A series of beautifully crafted stories. So far there are three episodes, all of them worth watching. And then watching again.
