"Where Do We Go From Here"

by Joseph McCombs

It's New Year's Eve, I've just flown in
I haven't seen you in a year
Three buses later I'm at your door
And the distance in an instant disappears

Now much as I like California
I know you can't be there
So I say "Where do we go from here?"
And you say "We could go anywhere."

There's music on the South Side
Or card games here at home
We could toast at Mullaney's at seven
And then hit the '80s clubs for the songs we know

We could go to a nice restaurant
Or do a pub crawl in the twilight air
So I say "Where do we go from here?"
And you say "I don't care."

Over a beer we're talking 'bout old times
And the people that we miss
But it keeps coming back to me and you
And we wonder what held us back from that first kiss

A glance turns into a wink, and then
A wink turns into a stare
So I say "Where do we go from here?"
And you say "I think I know where."

We make it back to your place
With music still in our heads
Glassy smiles on both our faces
We look at each other and fall into your bed

You're quick to rip away your shirt
I slowly unbutton your jeans
Our cautious hands explore each other
And we make love like awkward teens

          Later on that night
While I've got my fingers in your hair
You say "Where do we go from here?"
And I say "We're already there."
